What Happened
The trunk latch in your Elantra is the mechanism that lets you open the trunk from the inside. In some 2015-2016 models, this latch can get damaged and become stuck.
Risk if Unfixed
If the latch gets stuck, you or someone inside the trunk could get trapped, which could lead to serious injury.
Free Fix
Your Hyundai dealer will replace the faulty trunk latch base with a new one, and it's completely free. You should schedule the repair as soon as you get your recall notice.

Original — What Happened
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Elantra vehicles. The trunk latch may become damaged, preventing the opening of the trunk from the inside. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 401, "Internal Trunk Release."
Original — Risk if Unfixed
A person inside the trunk compartment may become trapped, increasing their risk of injury.
Original — Remedy
Dealers will replace the trunk latch base sub-assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 5, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 256.
