What Happened
The driver's air bag in your Elantra or Elantra GT is a safety feature that deploys in a crash to cushion the impact. However, in some 2015-2016 models, the inflator that makes the air bag deploy could rupture during deployment.
Risk if Unfixed
If the air bag inflator ruptures, sharp metal fragments could shoot toward you or your passengers, causing serious injury or even death. This is a life-threatening situation that requires immediate attention.
Free Fix
Your Hyundai dealer will inspect the air bag inflator and replace it if necessary, at no cost to you. You'll receive a letter with the details, and you should schedule the repair as soon as possible.

Original — What Happened
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Elantra and 2016 Elantra GT vehicles. The driver's air bag inflator may rupture during deployment.

Original — Remedy
Dealers will inspect and replace the air bag inflator, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 13, 2026. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 300. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on May 16, 2026.

What Happened
The trunk latch is the mechanism that lets you open the trunk from the inside of your Elantra. In some 2015-2016 models, this latch can get damaged, making it hard to open the trunk from inside.
Risk if Unfixed
If the trunk latch is damaged, you or a passenger could get trapped inside the trunk, which can lead to serious injury.
Free Fix
Your Hyundai dealer will replace the faulty trunk latch with a new one at no charge. You should schedule this repair as soon as you get the recall notice in the mail.

Original — What Happened
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Elantra vehicles. The trunk latch may become damaged, preventing the opening of the trunk from the inside. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 401, "Internal Trunk Release."

A person inside the trunk compartment may become trapped, increasing their risk of injury.
Original — Remedy
Dealers will replace the trunk latch base sub-assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 5, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 256.
