Component

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS

Manufacturer
HYUNDAI CARIBBEAN-PUERTO RICO
What Happened
The brake tubes in your vehicle are the flexible hoses that connect your rear brakes to the rest of the braking system. In some cases, these tubes can rub against metal brackets near the steering gear, causing them to wear down and corrode over time.
Risk if Unfixed
This wear and corrosion could cause brake fluid to leak, which would weaken your brakes and make it harder to stop your vehicle. If this happens, you could lose control of your car and be involved in a crash.
Free Fix
Your Hyundai dealer will reposition the brake tubes, add protective clips, and apply a special coating to prevent further corrosion. This repair is completely free, and you should schedule it as soon as you receive the recall notice.

Original — What Happened
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE REAR BRAKE TUBES PASS BEHIND THE FRONT SUSPENSION CROSSMEMBER. TWO STEERING GEARBOX MOUNTING BRACKETS ARE WELDED TO THE CROSSMEMBER. ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AN ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS), THE REAR BRAKE TUBES COULD CONTACT BOTH STEERING GEARBOX MOUNTING BRACKETS. ON VEHICLES THAT ARE NOT EQUIPPED WITH ABS, THE REAR BRAKE TUBES MAY CONTACT ONLY THE LEFT MOUNTING BRACKET. CONTACT BETWEEN THE REAR BRAKE TUBES AND THE STEERING BRACKETS COULD CAUSE WEAR AND CORROSION THAT COULD RESULT IN BRAKE FLUID LEAKAGE.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
FLUID LEAKAGE COULD RESULT IN REDUCED BRAKING CAPABILITY INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Original — Remedy
DEALERS WILL REPOSITION THE REAR BRAKE TUBES SO THEY DO NOT CONTACT THE MOUNTING BRACKETS, INSTALL BRAKE TUBE CLIPS TO CONTROL THE LOCATION OF THE REAR BRAKE TUBES, AND APPLY ANTI-CORROSION MATERIAL TO THE TUBES IN THE AREAS WHERE CONTACT WITH THE MOUNTING BRACKETS MAY HAVE OCCURRED. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON OCTOBER 13, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.

SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM

Manufacturer
Hyundai Motor Company
What Happened
Your vehicle's front control arm is a metal piece that helps steer your car. In certain 2001-2003 Elantra and 2003 Tiburon models, road salt in areas like the Northeast can cause internal corrosion, weakening the control arm.
Risk if Unfixed
If the corrosion gets bad, the control arm could break, making it harder to control your vehicle. This could increase the risk of a crash, especially if it happens while you're driving on the road.
Free Fix
Your Hyundai dealer will inspect the control arm for damage and replace it with a new one if needed, or add drainage holes and rust-proofing if it's still good. The repair is free, and you should schedule it as soon as possible.

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE

Manufacturer
HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY
What Happened
The wiring harness under your front seats is connected to the side airbags. In some 2001-2002 Elantras, this wiring can get damaged by items placed under the seats, causing the airbag system to malfunction.
Risk if Unfixed
If the wiring is damaged, the side airbags in front of you and the person sitting next to you might not deploy in a crash where they should. This could lead to serious injury if you're not protected by the airbag.
Free Fix
Your Hyundai dealer will add protective clips and revised wiring to the airbag system under your front seats, at no cost to you. This repair should be done as soon as possible to ensure your safety.

Original — What Happened
HYUNDAI IS RECALLING CERTAIN MY 2001-2002 ELANTRA VEHICLES. MOVEMENT OF THE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESS MOUNTED UNDER EACH FRONT SEAT, POSSIBLY CAUSED BY CONTACT FROM MATERIALS PLACED UNDER THE SEAT, MAY RESULT IN AN ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE THAT WOULD CAUSE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATION.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
THIS CONDITION ONLY RELATES TO THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SEAT MOUNTED SIDE IMPACT AIR BAGS AND MAY PREVENT SEAT MOUNTED SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT DURING A CRASH WHERE SUCH DEPLOYMENT SHOULD OCCUR. NON-DEPLOYMENT OF THE SRS AIR BAGS MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE DRIVER AND FRONT PASSENGER UNDER CERTAIN CRASH CONDITIONS.
Original — Remedy
DEALERS WILL INSTALL NEW SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR CLIPS AND REVISED SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESS ATTACHMENTS UNDER THE DRIVER'S AND FRONT PASSENGER'S SEATS. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING THE FOURTH QUARTER OF 2008, AND WILL BE SENT OUT IN SIX MAILINGS. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE

Manufacturer
HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY
What Happened
There's a small electrical control module under the dashboard that helps your airbags deploy in a crash. If liquid gets into this area, it could damage the module and prevent your airbags from working when they're supposed to.
Risk if Unfixed
If the airbag control module gets contaminated, your front airbags might not inflate during a crash when they should. This could leave you more vulnerable to injury in a collision.
Free Fix
Your Hyundai dealer will install a protective cover over the airbag control module connector to keep it safe from spills. This repair is free, and you should schedule it as soon as you get the recall notice.
