AIR BAGS Safety Recalls

High Priority #05V479000 Plain English
Component

AIR BAGS

Manufacturer
HYUNDAI CARIBBEAN-PUERTO RICO
What Happened
The airbag system in your vehicle includes a special computer that decides who's sitting in the front seats and whether to deploy the airbag. In some cases, this system might mistakenly identify a child seat as an adult if it's installed after an adult has sat in the right front seat without the seat being empty first.
Risk if Unfixed
If this happens, the airbag might deploy in a crash and could cause injury to the person sitting in the right front seat, especially a child in a child seat.
Free Fix
Your Hyundai dealer will update the computer system so it correctly identifies child seats, and this repair is free of charge. You should schedule the update as soon as possible.

Original — What Happened
CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AN ADVANCED AIR BAG SYSTEM. THE OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM (OCS) INSTALLED IN THE RIGHT FRONT SEAT OF THE VEHICLE MAY MISCLASSIFY A CHILD RESTRAINT SEAT (CRS) AS AN ADULT. THIS MAY OCCUR IF THE CRS IS INSTALLED AFTER AN ADULT HAS BEEN SEATED IN THE RIGHT FRONT SEAT. IF THERE HAS NOT BEEN A 'KEY ON' ' KEY OFF' CYCLE WITH THE RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER SEAT EMPTY PRIOR TO INSTALLATION OF THE CRS.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
THE POSSIBILITY OF MISCLASSIFICATION OF A CRS AS AN ADULT MAY ALLOW THE RIGHT FRONT AIRBAG OR SIDE IMPACT AIRBAG TO DEPLOY IN A CRASH AND COULD RESULT IN INJURY TO THE RIGHT FRONT OCCUPANT.
Original — Remedy
DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE VEHICLE'S OCS ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (ECU) TO REMOVE THE FEATURE THAT MAY CAUSE THE CRS TO BE RECOGNIZED AS AN ADULT. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 15, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI OF PUERTO RICO AT 1-800-981-0188.

Component

AIR BAGS

Manufacturer
HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY
What Happened
The airbag system in your vehicle has a sensor that tries to figure out whether the person in the right front seat is an adult or a child. However, this sensor might mistakenly think a child seat is an adult, which can be a problem if you install the child seat after an adult has sat in the right front seat.
Risk if Unfixed
If the sensor gets it wrong, the airbag might deploy in a crash, and that could hurt the person in the right front seat.
Free Fix
Your Hyundai dealer will update the sensor's computer so it can correctly identify a child seat. This repair is free, and you should schedule it as soon as possible.
