The aluminum bolts that secure the housing for the variable camshaft timing adjustment (VANOS) unit can loosen over time and possibly break.

Loose or broken VANOS unit bolts can result in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

The PCV valve in your vehicle helps manage the air pressure in your engine. The heater in this valve can malfunction and cause a short circuit.
Risk if Unfixed
If the heater shorts, it can melt the parts inside the valve, even when your car is turned off. This could cause a fire in your engine compartment, posing a serious risk to your safety.
Free Fix

What Happened
The fuel pump in your vehicle is the part that sends gasoline from the tank to your engine. In certain models, the wires connecting this pump can come loose, causing problems.
Risk if Unfixed
If the wires melt, your fuel pump could start leaking gasoline. This could also cause your engine to stall, making it harder to control your vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash.

The fuel filter heater is a part in your X5's diesel system that warms up the fuel when it's cold. In some 2009-2010 models, it can overheat and stay on even when you turn off the engine.

BMW is recalling certain model year 2009-2010 X5 xDrive35d vehicles equipped with a diesel engine and manufactured from June 13, 2009, through November 9, 2009. The fuel filter heater, which is used for warming up the diesel fuel during vehicle operation at low outside temperatures, could experience an electrical overload condition and become permanently activated.

AS A RESULT, THE SIDE MARKER LAMPS DO NOT ILLUMINATE.
