What Happened
The evaporative emissions canister is a part of your Focus's fuel system that helps control pollution. It has a valve called the Canister Purge Valve that can malfunction in some 2012-2018 models.
Risk if Unfixed
If the valve fails, your engine could stall unexpectedly while you're driving, which could lead to a crash.
Free Fix
Your Ford dealer will update the computer system that controls your engine, and this service is completely free. You'll get a letter with instructions on how to schedule the update once it's available.

What Happened
The engine block heater in your vehicle is a small wire that helps warm up your engine on cold days. It's connected to the engine block, which holds the engine's main components.
Risk if Unfixed
If the block heater cracks and shorts out, it could cause a fire, which is a serious safety risk.

Your Ford dealer will replace the faulty block heater with a new one at no cost to you. You should schedule the repair as soon as you receive the recall notice, and in the meantime, avoid plugging in the block heater until it's fixed.

Original — What Happened
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.

Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed March 6, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. What Happened
The fuel tank in your Focus is the part that stores gasoline. In some 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2017 models, the computer that controls the fuel system wasn't updated properly. This can cause a problem with the canister that helps manage fuel vapors.
Risk if Unfixed
If the canister malfunctions, your engine could stall while driving without warning. You might lose power steering and brakes, making it hard to control your vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash.

Your Ford dealer will update the computer system controlling your fuel tank, and also check for any faulty parts. If needed, they'll replace the faulty canister, fuel tank, and other parts — all at no cost to you.

On April 30, 2015, Ford expanded the recall to cover an additional 45,505 vehicles, including certain model year 2014-2015 Ford Transit Connect vehicles manufactured November 11, 2013, to August 29, 2014, 2014-2015 Ford Fiesta vehicles manufactured April 10, 2014, to June 17, 2014 and 2014 Ford Edge vehicles manufactured April 30, 2014, to May 21, 2014.
