What Happened
Your engine cooling fan might not work properly due to a software glitch, which can lead to reduced air conditioning performance and a rapid increase in engine coolant temperature.
Risk if Unfixed
If this happens, you could lose engine cooling and even the engine might fail, leaving you with little time to react and increasing the risk of a crash.
Free Fix
Volvo will replace the faulty fan control module for free, starting in July 2009. You can contact Volvo's customer care center at 1-800-458-1552 to schedule the repair.

VOLVO IS RECALLING 17,614 MY 2008-2009 S80, V70, AND XC70 VEHICLES. THE ENGINE COOLING FAN MAY STOP WORKING DUE TO A SOFTWARE PROGRAMMING ERROR IN THE FAN CONTROL MODULE (FCM). DEPENDING ON DRIVING CONDITIONS, THE CUSTOMER MAY EXPERIENCE REDUCED AIR CONDITIONING PERFORMANCE, AND/OR RAPID INCREASE IN ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE.

THE ALUMINUM BRACKET FOR THE ENGINE MOUNT COULD BREAK DUE TO LACK OF ADEQUATE CLAMPING FORCE. THIS COULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO COME IN CONTACT WITH THE SUB-FRAME, ULTIMATELY RESULTING IN A REDUCED ENGINE TORQUE OR STALLING OF THE ENGINE WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

What Happened
The flexible steel cable in your vehicle's front seat belts helps keep you secure in case of an accident. In some 2007-2020 models, this cable can weaken over time and break.

If the cable fails, your seat belt won't restrain you properly in a crash. This increases your risk of serious injury.
Free Fix

Original — What Happened
Volvo Cars of N.A., LLC (Volvo) is recalling certain 2008-2016 V70 and XC70, 2007-2016 S80, 2011-2018 S60 and V60, 2016-2018 S60 Cross Country, 2014-2020 S60L, 2009-2015 S80L, 2009-2016 XC60 and 2015-2018 V60 Cross Country vehicles. The flexible steel cable that connects the seat belt to the front outboard seating positions may fatigue over time, causing the seat belt to not secure the occupant in the event of a crash.

Your Volvo S80 has a system that checks the air pressure in your tires. But in some 2007-2010 models, this system has incorrect settings that could cause problems.

UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS THE SOFTWARE WITHIN THE CENTRAL ELECTRONIC MODULE (CEM) MAY NOT SEND A SIGNAL TO THE FUEL PUMP ELECTRONIC MODULE (PEM). THIS MISSING SIGNAL TO THE PEM INHIBITS THE START OF THE FUEL PUMP. THE DRIVER MAY BE ABLE TO START THE ENGINE IN SPITE OF THE FUEL PUMP NOT BEING ACTIVATED DUE TO RESIDUAL PRESSURE IN THE FUEL SYSTEM. The central electronic module in your S80 or V70 controls many systems, including the windshield wipers. In some 2007-2008 models, the software in this module might not work correctly.
Risk if Unfixed
If the software fails, your windshield wipers could stop working when you need them most, like in rain or snow. In the worst case, they might even turn on unexpectedly when you don't want them to.
Free Fix
Your Volvo dealer will update the software in your central electronic module for free. This should only take a short visit, and you'll be back on the road with working wipers.
