What Happened
The child protection lock on your rear doors is a safety feature that helps keep kids from opening the doors from the inside. The lock has a lever on the door that can get damaged if you close the door too hard when the lock is set.
Risk if Unfixed
If the lever gets damaged, you might think the lock is still on, but it could actually open from the inside. If that happens while you're driving, a passenger could fall out of the vehicle and get hurt.
Free Fix
Your Toyota dealer will shorten the lever to prevent this from happening. This repair is free, and you should contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 to schedule it as soon as possible.

Original — What Happened
CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES HAVE A CHILD PROTECTION LOCK (CPL) SYSTEM ON BOTH OF THE REAR SIDE DOORS. WHEN AN OPERATOR OF THE VEHICLE CLOSES THE DOOR VERY HARD WITH THE CPL LEVER SET TO THE LOCK POSITION, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE LEVER MAY CONTACT THE BODY PANEL, CAUSING THE CPL LEVER TO MOVE INTO THE UNLOCK POSITION.

THIS CONDITION COULD ALLOW THE DOOR TO BE OPENED WITH THE INSIDE WHILE THE OPERATOR BELIEVES THAT THE CPL WAS ACTIVATED. IF THE DOOR WERE OPENED FROM THE INSIDE WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION, AN OCCUPANT COULD FALL OUT AND BE INJURED.
