What Happened
The transmission control module in your S80 is a computer that helps your gears shift smoothly. In some 2011-2013 models, this computer might get a software glitch.
Risk if Unfixed
If this happens, your engine RPMs could drop, and your engine might stall while you're driving. This could make it harder to control your vehicle and increase the risk of a crash.
Free Fix
Your Volvo dealer will update the software in your transmission control module to fix the issue, and this repair will be done at no cost to you.

Original — What Happened
VOLVO IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2011-2013 S80 VEHICLES. A SOFTWARE ERROR MAY PREVENT THE TRANSMISSION FROM DOWNSHIFTING SUCH AS SHIFTING FROM FIFTH TO FOURTH GEAR WHEN COASTING.

THIS MAY RESULT IN DECREASED ENGINE RPMS AND POSSIBLE ENGINE STALL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Original — Remedy
VOLVO WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL UPGRADE THE SOFTWARE TO THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE, FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 10, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VOLVO CARS AT 1-800-458-1552.
