What Happened
The driver's air bag in your Volvo is designed to protect you in the event of a crash. In some 2001-2009 S80 and 2001-2006 S60 models, the air bag inflator can degrade over time, making it more likely to malfunction.
Risk if Unfixed
If the air bag inflator explodes, it could send sharp metal fragments flying towards you or your passengers, leading to serious injuries or even fatalities.
Free Fix
Your Volvo dealer will replace the faulty air bag with a new, safe one, at no cost to you. You should schedule the repair as soon as possible, especially if you've noticed any issues with your air bag.

Original — What Happened
Volvo Car USA, LLC (Volvo Car) is recalling certain 2001-2006 S80 and 2001-2009 S60 vehicles. The driver's air bag inflator may explode during deployment, due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

Dealers will replace the driver's air bag, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 29, 2021. Owners may contact Volvo Car customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo's number for this recall is R10125.
