What Happened
There's a problem with the rust prevention coating on the parking brake shafts in your 2016 Outlander or Outlander Sport. This coating might have been damaged during assembly, allowing water to get in and cause the shafts to corrode.
Risk if Unfixed
If the parking brake shafts corrode, they could bind, making it hard for the parking brake to work properly. This means your car could roll away, which increases the risk of a crash.
Free Fix
Don't worry, this is free! The dealership will replace the entire rear brake caliper assembly for you, and they'll do it at no cost to you. You've already been notified by mail with a letter dated May 4, 2021.

Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2016 Outlander and Outlander Sport vehicles. The rust prevention coating on the rear brake operating shafts could have been peeled off during the assembly process. As a result, water entering the rear brake caliper boot may cause the parking brake operating shafts to corrode and possibly bind.

What Happened
The second-row center seat belt buckle in your Outlander helps keep passengers safe in the backseat. In certain 2014-2019 models, this buckle can get in the way of the right-side buckle when you fold down the seats, causing the cover to come loose and the buckle to fail.
Risk if Unfixed
If the right-side seat belt buckle doesn't work, a passenger in the backseat could be at risk of serious injury if the vehicle crashes or stops suddenly.
Free Fix
Your Mitsubishi dealer will adjust the buckle cover, add a warning label to the seat base, and include a new warning label in your owner's manual, all at no cost to you. Just wait for the recall notice and schedule the fix.
