Component
PARKING BRAKE
Manufacturer
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
What Happened
There's a problem with the rust prevention coating on the parking brake shafts in your 2016 Outlander or Outlander Sport. This coating might have been damaged during assembly, allowing water to get in and cause the shafts to corrode.
Risk if Unfixed
If the parking brake shafts corrode, they could bind, making it hard for the parking brake to work properly. This means your car could roll away, which increases the risk of a crash.
Free Fix
Don't worry, this is free! The dealership will replace the entire rear brake caliper assembly for you, and they'll do it at no cost to you. You've already been notified by mail with a letter dated May 4, 2021.

Original — What Happened
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2016 Outlander and Outlander Sport vehicles. The rust prevention coating on the rear brake operating shafts could have been peeled off during the assembly process. Original — Risk if Unfixed
If the parking brake operating shafts bind, the parking brakes may not engage or disengage fully. If the parking brakes do not engage properly, the vehicle could rollaway, increasing the risk of a crash.
