What Happened
The liftgate gas spring in your Outlander is a metal rod that helps hold up the hatchback when you open it. Over time, the metal can corrode and lose pressure, causing it to break or the liftgate to fall unexpectedly.
Risk if Unfixed
If the gas spring breaks or the liftgate falls, it can suddenly drop down and hit you or someone nearby, causing injury.
Free Fix
Your Mitsubishi dealer will replace the liftgate gas springs on the left and right sides for free. You'll get a letter with instructions to schedule the repair, and you should do so as soon as you receive it – it's completely free.

Original — What Happened
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2018-2022 Outlander PHEV and 2014-2020 Outlander vehicles. The liftgate gas spring cylinders may corrode and lose pressure, which can result in a gas spring cylinder rupture or the liftgate falling unexpectedly.

A gas spring cylinder rupture or a liftgate falling unexpectedly can increase the risk of injury.
Original — Remedy
MMNA will replace the left and right liftgate gas springs, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 17, 2026. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-26-001. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov June 3, 2026. This recall expands previous NHTSA recall number 25V507.

What Happened
The liftgate strut in your Outlander is a metal rod that helps hold the liftgate open. Over time, it can corrode and lose its hold, causing the liftgate to fall unexpectedly.
Risk if Unfixed
If the strut fails, the liftgate could drop suddenly and hit you, or someone nearby, which could cause serious injury.
Free Fix
Your Mitsubishi dealer will replace both the left and right liftgate struts with new, rust-resistant ones, at no cost to you. You should schedule the repair as soon as you receive the recall notice.
