What Happened
The fuel pump in your vehicle is the part that sends gasoline from the tank to your engine. Under certain conditions, it could get a vapor lock, like a clog, which would make your engine stall.
Risk if Unfixed
If the engine stalls, you won't be able to control your speed or accelerate for about 15-20 minutes. This could make you more likely to be in a crash.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will add a small device to the electrical system that powers your fuel pump to prevent vapor lock. This repair is free, and you should contact the dealer to schedule it.

Original — What Happened
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, UNDER CERTAIN ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS, A VAPOR LOCK IN THE FUEL PUMP COULD OCCUR CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STALL. IF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN, THE ENGINE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO BE RESTARTED FOR APPROXIMATELY 15 TO 20 MINUTES.

DEALERS WILL INSTALL A RESISTOR IN THE ELECTRICAL LINE POWERING THE FUEL PUMP IN ORDER TO PREVENT AN OCCURRENCE OF VAPOR LOCK. THE RECALL BEGAN MAY 11, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117.
