What Happened
The fuel pump in your vehicle is a critical part that delivers gasoline to your engine. In certain conditions, it could get clogged, causing your engine to stall.
Risk if Unfixed
If the engine stalls, you could lose control of your vehicle, and it might be hard to accelerate or maintain your speed, which increases the risk of a crash.
Free Fix
Your dealer will install a small device in the electrical line that powers the fuel pump to prevent stalling. This repair is free of charge, and you should schedule it as soon as possible.

Original — What Happened
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, UNDER CERTAIN ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS, A VAPOR LOCK IN THE FUEL PUMP COULD OCCUR CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STALL. IF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN, THE ENGINE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO BE RESTARTED FOR APPROXIMATELY 15 TO 20 MINUTES.

DEALERS WILL INSTALL A RESISTOR IN THE ELECTRICAL LINE POWERING THE FUEL PUMP IN ORDER TO PREVENT AN OCCURRENCE OF VAPOR LOCK. THE RECALL BEGAN MAY 11, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117.
