What Happened
The engine control system in your vehicle is the brain that helps manage the engine's performance. In some 2020-2021 models, this system might not work properly during engine start, causing loss of braking assist.
Risk if Unfixed
If this happens, your vehicle's electronic braking system could fail, making it harder to stop quickly, which increases the risk of a crash.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will update the engine control system's software, which is free of charge. You should schedule this update as soon as possible.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020 M340i, M340i xDrive, 540i, 540i xDrive, X3 M40i, 2020-2021 X4 M40i, 745Le xDrive, 2019-2021 Z4 M40i, and 2020-2021 Toyota Supra vehicles. During engine start, the engine management software may cause loss of braking assist. Full mechanical braking (without assist) remains available.

What Happened
The fuel tank in your vehicle is made of two halves that are welded together. In some 2020-2021 Z4 and Toyota Supra models, the weld between these halves might not be strong enough, which could cause it to fail.
Risk if Unfixed
If the weld fails, fuel could leak out of the tank, and if there's an ignition source nearby, it could catch fire.
Free Fix
Your dealer will replace the fuel tank with a new one that's designed to be safer, and it will be done at no cost to you.

What Happened
The engine starter relay in your vehicle is a small electrical component that helps get your engine running when you turn the key. Over time, it can corrode and fail.
Risk if Unfixed
If the starter relay corrodes and shorts out, it could cause a fire in your vehicle. This is a serious risk that could cause significant damage or injury.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will replace the faulty starter relay with a new one, completely free of charge. To ensure your safety, park your vehicle outside and away from any buildings until the repair is done.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2019-2021 BMW 330i, 2019-2022 BMW Z4, 2020-2022 BMW 530i, X3, X4, Toyota Supra, 2021-2022 BMW 430i, 430i Convertible, and 2022 BMW 230i vehicles. The engine starter relay may corrode, causing the relay to overheat and short circuit.

Owners are advised to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the remedy is complete. Dealers will replace the engine starter, free of charge. EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS

What Happened
The headlight adjuster on your Z4 or Supra is supposed to keep your headlights aligned properly. However, in some 2019-2020 models, this adjuster can be turned too far, making it difficult to adjust the headlight beams correctly.
Risk if Unfixed
If the headlight beams are misaligned, you might blind oncoming drivers or have reduced visibility while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.
Free Fix
Your dealer will check and adjust your headlight adjuster plugs to ensure proper headlight alignment, at no cost to you. You should schedule the repair as soon as you receive the recall notice.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Z4 sDrive30i, Z4 M40i and 2020 Toyota Supra vehicles. The headlamps are able to be adjusted horizontally. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices and Associated Equipment."

Should the headlamps be adjusted horizontally, there could be increased glare and reduced visibility for oncoming drivers, or reduced visibility for the vehicle operator, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the headlamp vertical and horizontal adjustment plugs, correcting them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began December 23, 2020. The headlight control unit in your vehicle is the part that controls your headlights. In some 2020 Z4 and 330i models, this unit can fail and cause one or both headlights to not work.

If your headlights fail, your visibility will be reduced, especially at night or in low-light conditions. This could increase the risk of a crash.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA

What Happened
The back-up camera system in your vehicle helps you see what's behind you when you're in reverse. In some models, a software glitch can cause the camera display to lose its settings, so the image goes away when you put the car in reverse.
Risk if Unfixed
Without the back-up camera image, you could be more likely to not see something behind your vehicle, which could lead to a crash when you're backing up.
Free Fix
Your dealer will update the back-up camera software to fix the issue, and it's completely free. You should contact your dealer to schedule the update as soon as possible.
