What Happened
The tailgate locking mechanism in your vehicle is the part that keeps your tailgate secure. Unfortunately, some of these mechanisms were made wrong, which could cause your tailgate to lock or unlock at the wrong time.
Risk if Unfixed
If your tailgate doesn't lock properly, it could be left open, especially when you're driving in cold weather. This could let cargo fall out, or even make a collision more likely.
Free Fix
Your authorized Volvo dealer will replace the faulty locking mechanism for free, so schedule the repair as soon as you get the recall notice. If you don't get the repair done promptly, call Volvo at 1-800-458-1552 to follow up.

Original — What Happened
ON CERTAIN STATION WAGONS, THE TAILGATE LOCKING MECHANISM MAY HAVE BEEN INCORRECTLY MANUFACTURED WHICH, IN COMBINATION WITH COLD TEMPERATURES, COULD CAUSE IMPROPER LOCKING OF THE TAILGATE.

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE LOCKING MECHANISM FOR THE TAILGATE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN SEPTEMBER 25, 2000. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT VOLVO AT 1-800-458-1552.
