What Happened
The steering rack and pinion are key parts that help you turn your vehicle's wheels. In certain 2020 X5 and X7 models, the teeth on the steering rack can break if you make sudden turns or drive aggressively.
Risk if Unfixed
If the teeth break, you could lose control of your vehicle's steering, which would increase the risk of a crash.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will replace the steering rack with a new one, at no cost to you. This repair is free, and you should schedule it as soon as you get the recall notice.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020 X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i, X5 M50i, X7 xDrive40i and X7 M50i vehicles. The steering rack pinion teeth may break under load, resulting in a loss of steering control.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
A loss of steering control increases risk of a crash.
Original — Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering rack, free of charge. The recall began August 21, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
