What Happened
The air bag on your driver's side is a safety feature that inflates in the event of a crash. If your X5's steering wheel has this air bag, it could be at risk of exploding.
Risk if Unfixed
If the air bag explodes, sharp metal fragments could fly towards you or your passengers, causing serious injury or even death.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will inspect the air bag and replace it with a new, safer one at no cost to you. Do not drive your vehicle until the repair is complete. Schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2000-2001 X5 vehicles that may be equipped with a sport steering wheel containing a Takata PSDI-4 air bag inflator. The inflator may explode during deployment due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature, and temperature cycling.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.
Original — Remedy
Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the remedy is complete. Dealers will inspect and replace the driver's front air bag, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 29, 2025. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning December 23, 2025. This recall expands previous NHTSA recall number 19V015.

What Happened
The driver-side air bag module in your vehicle is a safety device designed to inflate in a crash to protect you. In some cases, the module was replaced with a potentially faulty one, which could cause problems.
Risk if Unfixed
If the air bag inflator ruptures in a crash, sharp metal fragments could strike you or other passengers, causing serious injury or even death.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will inspect the driver-side air bag module and replace it with a safe one, free of charge. Please don't drive your vehicle until this repair is done. Schedule the repair as soon as you receive the recall notice.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2000-2002 BMW 320i, 323i, 325i, 325xi, 330i, 330xi, 323Ci, 325Ci, 330Ci, M3, 323iT, 325iT and 325xiT vehicles, 2001-2002 525i, 530i, 540i, M5, 525iT and 540iT vehicles, and 2001-2003 X5 3.0i, X5 4.4i, and X5 4.6is vehicles. These vehicles may have had a driver-side air bag module installed as replacement equipment such as after a vehicle crash necessitating replacement of the original air bag, or as a remedy part for a prior recall. These replacement modules contain an air bag inflator that may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to lower absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
Original — Remedy
Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the vehicle has been remedied. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver side air bag module, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 15, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
