What Happened
The rearview camera system in your vehicle is the part that helps you see what's behind your car when you're reversing. In certain BMW models, a small part of the camera image might not show up, or the screen might not turn on when you shift into reverse.
Risk if Unfixed
If you rely on the rearview camera to see behind your vehicle, a missing or reduced view can increase the risk of a crash or injury, especially when reversing into a blind spot.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will check the rearview camera software and update it if needed, at no cost to you. This repair is free, and you should schedule it as soon as you get the recall notice.

When shifting into Reverse, a small portion of the rearview image may be obscured, or the screen may not illuminate. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020 X3 sDrive40i, X3 xDrive40i and X3M40i vehicles. These vehicles were not programmed with rearview camera software during assembly, therefore, when the transmission is shifted to reverse, a rearview image is not displayed. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rearview Mirrors."

The back-up camera in your vehicle is designed to give you a clear view of the area behind your car when you're reversing. In certain models, the camera settings can be adjusted in a way that makes the rear view image invisible.

If the rear view image is blocked, you might not see obstacles or people behind your vehicle when you're reversing, increasing the risk of a collision.

Your BMW dealer will update the back-up camera software to ensure the rear view image always displays correctly, and this repair is free of charge. You'll be notified when it's time to schedule the update.
