FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL

Manufacturer
BMW of North America, LLC
What Happened
The EGR cooler in your diesel engine helps reduce exhaust emissions. It's like a heat exchanger that keeps your engine running smoothly. In some 2013-2018 BMW models, this cooler can leak internally, causing problems with your engine.
Risk if Unfixed
If the EGR cooler leaks, diesel soot and coolant mix together, creating a fire hazard. A smoldering fire in your engine could spread to the intake manifold, causing it to melt and potentially start a larger fire. This increases the risk of a serious engine fire.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will replace the faulty EGR cooler and inspect your intake manifold to make sure it's safe. If the manifold is damaged, they'll replace it too – all for free. You should schedule the repair as soon as you get the recall notice, and a new remedy will be available in June 2022.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:EMISSION CONTROL:GAS RECIRCULATION VALVE (EGR VALVE)

Manufacturer
BMW of North America, LLC
What Happened
The EGR valve in your vehicle helps control emissions and is made up of a cooler that cools down exhaust gases. In some 2013-2018 models, this cooler can leak, allowing soot and coolant to mix and potentially cause a fire.
Risk if Unfixed
If the EGR cooler leaks, soot and coolant can mix and smolder, eventually melting your intake manifold. This could cause a fire, putting you and others at risk.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will inspect the EGR cooler and replace it if necessary. If it's already leaked, they'll also replace the intake manifold. Both repairs will be done at no cost to you.
