AIR BAGS Safety Recalls

High Priority #21V521000 Plain English
Component

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL

Manufacturer
BMW of North America, LLC
What Happened
The air bag system in your X3 or X4 uses sensors to determine if someone is sitting in the front passenger seat. But in some 2018-2019 models, these sensors might have been installed incorrectly, causing the system to think the seat is empty.
Risk if Unfixed
If the air bag system thinks the seat is empty, it will turn off the front air bag in a crash. This means you won't have the protection of the air bag, which could increase your risk of injury.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will replace the seat foam, which includes the faulty sensors, with a new one that works correctly. This repair is free of charge, and you should schedule it as soon as you get the recall notice.

The front passenger seat occupant classification system may have been improperly assembled, which could result in the misclassification of the seat as unoccupied, and deactivate the front air bag.

A deactivated front air bag will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Original — Remedy
Dealers will replace the seat foam, which includes the occupant classification system, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on September 3, 2021. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
