What Happened
The driver's air bag in your Volvo is the part that deploys to protect you in a crash. In some 2001-2009 S60 and 2001-2006 S80 models, the air bag's inflator can explode if it's exposed to high humidity and heat for a long time.
Risk if Unfixed
If the inflator explodes, it could send sharp metal fragments flying into you or other passengers, causing serious injury or even death.
Free Fix
Your Volvo dealer will replace the faulty air bag with a new one, for free. Just schedule an appointment as soon as you get the recall notice, and they'll take care of it at no cost to you.

Original — What Happened
Volvo Car USA, LLC (Volvo Car) is recalling certain 2001-2006 S80 and 2001-2009 S60 vehicles. The driver's air bag inflator may explode during deployment, due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.
Original — Remedy
Dealers will replace the driver's air bag, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 29, 2021. Owners may contact Volvo Car customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo's number for this recall is R10125.

What Happened
The driver's side airbag in your vehicle is the safety device that deploys to cushion your head and neck in a crash. In some 2001-2003 Volvo S80 and S60 models, the inflator that makes the airbag deploy could shatter and send sharp metal pieces flying.
Risk if Unfixed
If your airbag inflator ruptures, metal shards could hit you or your passengers, leading to serious injury or even death.
Free Fix
Volvo will replace your faulty airbag module with a new, safer one at no charge. Your dealer will take care of this critical repair as soon as you schedule an appointment.

Original — What Happened
Volvo Car USA LLC (Volvo Car) is recalling certain 2001-2003 S80 and S60 vehicles sold or ever registered in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The driver side frontal air bag inflator may rupture, sending metal fragments into the passage compartment, when the driver side air bag is deployed.

Metal fragments can strike vehicle occupants increasing the risk of serious injury or death.

Volvo Car will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver side air bag module, free of charge. The recall began April 20, 2021. Owners may contact Volvo Car customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo Car's number for this recall is R10058.
