What Happened
The lug nuts on your vehicle's wheels are the bolts that keep the wheels securely attached. In some 2021 Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, and Passat models, these bolts might not have been tightened correctly.
Risk if Unfixed
If the bolts loosen while you're driving, your wheels could come loose, making it harder to control your vehicle. This could cause a crash.
Free Fix
Your Volkswagen dealer will check the tightness of the wheel bearing bolts and replace them if necessary, all for free. You should schedule the repair as soon as possible after receiving the recall notice.

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2021 Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, and Passat vehicles. The front wheel bearing bolts may have been incorrectly tightened.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
The bolts may loosen and cause a loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Original — Remedy
Dealers will inspect the tightness of the wheel bearing bolts and replace the bolts, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 2, 2021. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 40R7.

What Happened
Your vehicle's wheel lug bolt holes might have been machined incorrectly, which can prevent the wheel from attaching properly to the wheel bearing hub.

If the wheel isn't attached correctly, it may come loose and separate from your vehicle, which can increase the risk of a crash.

Volkswagen will contact you to have your vehicle inspected and, if necessary, the wheels, lug bolts, and wheel bearings will be replaced, all free of charge.
