Component

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

Manufacturer
Mazda North American Operations
What Happened
The evaporative canister and its vent hose are part of a system that helps your Mazda6's engine breathe. In 2010-2012 models with a 2.5L engine, spiders might build a web in the vent hose, blocking it and creating a vacuum in the fuel tank.
Risk if Unfixed
If the fuel tank gets too much negative pressure, it could crack, leading to a fuel leak. This increases the risk of a fire.
Free Fix
Your Mazda dealer will update the powertrain control module to prevent this issue and inspect the vent hose. If a web was found, they'll replace the fuel tank and check valve. These repairs are completely free of charge.

Original — Risk if Unfixed
Negative pressure could cause the fuel tank to crack resulting in a fuel leak, increasing the risk of a fire.
Original — Remedy
Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the powertrain control module and inspect and clean the canister vent line. FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY

Manufacturer
MAZDA MOTOR CORP
What Happened
The evaporative canister vent line in your Mazda6 is a tube that helps your car's emissions system work properly. In some 2009-2010 models, a type of spider can get stuck in this line and cause a blockage.
Risk if Unfixed
If this happens, the pressure inside your fuel tank could become too low, and your tank might crack. This could lead to a fuel leak and a risk of fire.
Free Fix
Your Mazda dealer will inspect the vent line, clean it out, and install a spring to keep spiders out. This service will be done at no cost to you. You should schedule it as soon as you get the recall notice.

Original — What Happened
MAZDA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009-2010 MAZDA6 VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM APRIL 8, 2008, THROUGH FEBRUARY 8, 2010. A CERTAIN TYPE OF SPIDER MAY WEAVE A WEB IN THE EVAPORATIVE CANISTER VENT LINE AND THIS MAY CAUSE A RESTRICTION IN THE LINE. IF THIS OCCURS, THE FUEL TANK PRESSURE MAY BECOME EXCESSIVELY NEGATIVE WHEN THE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM WORKS TO PURGE THE VAPORS FROM THE CANISTER.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
AS THE CANISTER IS PURGED REPEATEDLY DURING NORMAL OPERATION, THE STRESS ON THE FUEL TANK MAY EVENTUALLY RESULT IN A CRACK, POTENTIALLY LEADING TO FUEL LEAKAGE AD AN INCREASED RISK OF FIRE.
Original — Remedy
DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND CLEAN UP THE CANISTER VENT LINE, AND INSTALL A SPRING TO PREVENT THIS TYPE OF SPIDER FROM ENTERING THE VENT LINE. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE MARCH 25, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MAZDA CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-222-5500.

Free Fix
Your Mazda dealer will inspect the control arm's mounting point and either add protection against rust or replace the cross member with a stronger version – both fixes are free of charge. You'll get a notification when it's time to schedule the repair.
