What Happened
The air bag system in your Jeep is designed to protect you in a crash. However, in certain 2003-2004 models, a tiny electrical noise can cause the air bag control module to fail, leading to unexpected air bag deployment.
Risk if Unfixed
If the air bags deploy unexpectedly while you're driving, it could cause serious injury and increase the risk of a crash. You could lose control of your vehicle, or worse, be hurt by the deploying air bags.
Free Fix
Your Jeep dealer will replace the faulty air bag control module and side impact sensors, free of charge. This repair is urgent, and you should schedule it as soon as you get the recall notice.

Original — What Happened
Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2003 Jeep Liberty vehicles manufactured March 29, 2003, to July 3, 2003, and 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured May 27, 2003, to May 20, 2004. Due to electrical noise beyond the tolerance of the air bag electronic control module (ECM), a component in the ECM may fail, causing the front air bags, side air bags, and/or seatbelt pretensioners to deploy inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated.

Inadvertent deployment of the air bags may increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash.
Original — Remedy
Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the air bag electronic control module and the side impact sensors, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on May 5, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R60.

What Happened
The air bag control module in your vehicle is the brain that tells your air bags when to deploy. In some older Jeep and Dodge models, this module can malfunction and send false signals, causing the air bags to deploy unexpectedly.
Risk if Unfixed
If the air bags deploy while you're driving, you're at risk of serious injury. The sudden deployment could also cause a crash, putting you and others in harm's way.
Free Fix
Your Chrysler dealer will replace the faulty control module and sensors at no cost to you. This is a free repair, and you should schedule it as soon as possible to ensure your safety on the road.

This recall remedy was applied during earlier recall campaigns of these vehicles under safety recalls 12V527 and 13V040. All owners that have not had the recall repair performed under safety recalls 12V527 or 13V040 are strongly encouraged to have it performed and not wait for the final remedy to be deployed to the field. What Happened
The air bag control module in your Jeep is a critical system that decides when to deploy your airbags. In certain 2002-2004 models, this module could fail and send your airbags deploying at the wrong time, even while you're driving.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will install a supplemental jumper harness to the airbag control module, free of charge. Owners were notified of the recall by interim letter in January 2013. The remedy for affected Liberty vehicles is expected to be available in April 2013. The remedy for affected Grand Cherokee vehicles is expected to be available later in the year.
