What Happened
The front seat belt pretensioner in your vehicle is a safety device that tightens the seat belt during a crash. In some 2020-2022 Hyundais, this device could explode and send sharp metal pieces into the vehicle, hitting you or your passengers.
Risk if Unfixed
If the pretensioner explodes in a crash, it could shoot metal shards at you, causing serious injury.
Free Fix
Your Hyundai dealer will cover the seat belt pretensioner with a protective cap to prevent it from exploding, and this repair is free of charge. You should schedule the repair as soon as you receive the recall notice.

Original — What Happened
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Accent, 2021-2022 Elantra, and 2021-2022 Elantra HEV vehicles. In the event of a crash, the front driver-side and/or passenger-side seat belt pretensioners may explode upon deployment.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
An exploding seat belt pretensioner can project metal fragments into the vehicle, strike vehicle occupants, and result in injury.
Original — Remedy
Dealers will secure the seat belt pretensioner(s) with a cap, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 28, 2022. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 229. This recall expands and replaces NHTSA recall numbers 21V-796, 22V-069, 22V-218, and 22V-123 for Accent, Elantra, and Elantra HEV vehicles. All Accent, Elantra, and Elantra HEV vehicles already repaired under the previous recalls will need to have the new remedy completed.

What Happened
Your 2020-2021 Accent has seat belt pretensioners in the front driver-side and passenger-side seats. These are the parts that tighten the seat belts in the event of a crash to keep you safe. However, in some cases, they could shatter and send sharp metal fragments flying into the cabin, potentially hurting you or your passengers.

If the seat belt pretensioner explodes in a crash, it could send sharp metal fragments flying towards you and your passengers, causing injury.

Your Hyundai dealer will replace the faulty seat belt pretensioners with new, safer ones – completely free of charge. You should schedule the repair as soon as possible to ensure your safety on the road.
