What Happened
The seat belt pretensioner is a crucial safety device that tightens your seat belt during a crash. In your 2020-2022 Accent, 2021-2022 Elantra, or 2021-2022 Elantra HEV, the pretensioner might not work as designed and could explode, sending sharp metal fragments into the cabin during a crash.
Risk if Unfixed
If the pretensioner explodes, it could hit you or your passengers, causing serious injury. In a worst-case scenario, this could lead to severe harm or even life-threatening injuries.
Free Fix
Your dealer will secure the seat belt pretensioner with a protective cap at no cost to you. You should schedule this free repair as soon as possible, especially if you've already had a previous recall repair on your vehicle.

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Accent, 2021-2022 Elantra, and 2021-2022 Elantra HEV vehicles. In the event of a crash, the front driver-side and/or passenger-side seat belt pretensioners may explode upon deployment.

Original — Remedy
Dealers will secure the seat belt pretensioner(s) with a cap, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 28, 2022. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 229. This recall expands and replaces NHTSA recall numbers 21V-796, 22V-069, 22V-218, and 22V-123 for Accent, Elantra, and Elantra HEV vehicles. All Accent, Elantra, and Elantra HEV vehicles already repaired under the previous recalls will need to have the new remedy completed.

What Happened
The front seat belt pretensioners in your Elantra or Accent are the parts that help tighten the seat belt during a crash to keep you safe. In some 2020-2022 models, these pretensioners can burst open and shoot out sharp metal fragments.
Risk if Unfixed
If your seat belt pretensioner explodes, sharp metal could fly into the vehicle and hit you or other passengers, causing serious injury.
Free Fix
Your Hyundai dealer will replace the faulty seat belt pretensioners with new, safer ones at no cost to you. You'll receive a notice about the repair, and once the new parts are ready, you should schedule it to ensure your safety.

What Happened
The trunk latch is the mechanism that lets you open your trunk from the inside. In some 2016-2020 Hyundai models, this latch can break, making it hard to open the trunk from the inside.
Risk if Unfixed
If the latch is damaged, you or someone inside the trunk could get trapped, which could lead to serious injury.

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Sonata, 2016-2018 Sonata Hybrid, 2018-2020 Accent, and 2016-2017 Azera vehicles. The trunk latch may become damaged, preventing the opening of the trunk from the inside. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 401, "Internal Trunk Release."
