What Happened
The master cylinder is a crucial part of your vehicle's brake system, responsible for sending brake fluid to the brake pads when you press the pedal. In some cases, the seal on your master cylinder can fail, causing it to leak brake fluid.
Risk if Unfixed
If the brake fluid leaks out, you could experience poor braking performance, which could lead to a vehicle crash. Braking poorly on the road can be extremely hazardous, especially at high speeds.
Free Fix
Your dealer will notify you and offer to replace your defective master cylinder with a new one, free of charge. You should contact the dealer to schedule the repair as soon as possible.

What Happened
The passenger-side airbag in your vehicle is designed to protect you in the event of a crash. However, some older models have a faulty inflator that could rupture and release sharp metal fragments if exposed to high humidity and temperature changes for a long time.
Risk if Unfixed
If the inflator explodes, sharp metal fragments could fly towards you, causing serious injury or even death. This is a life-threatening situation that could happen suddenly and without warning.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will replace the faulty airbag inflator with a new, safer one at no cost to you. This repair is free, and you should schedule it as soon as possible.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2000-2005 323iT, 325iT, 325xiT, 320i, 323i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 330i and 330xi and 2000-2006 323Ci, 325Ci, 328Ci, 330Ci, M3 Coupe, 323Cic, 325Cic, 330Cic, and M3 Convertible vehicles equipped with non-desiccated frontal Takata PSAN inflators and PSPI passenger frontal air bag inflators containing phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant that were used as interim remedy parts for previous Takata recalls. These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

What Happened
The passenger air bag in your vehicle is designed to deploy in the event of a crash to protect the passenger seat occupant. However, in certain models, the air bag's inflator could be too powerful and rupture, shooting metal fragments into the cabin.
Risk if Unfixed
If the air bag inflator ruptures on impact, metal fragments could hit and seriously injure the person in the passenger seat or others nearby. This is a life-threatening situation that could cause severe injury or even death.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will replace the faulty passenger air bag with a safer one, free of charge. Please don't drive your vehicle until it's been repaired. You'll get a notice from BMW with instructions on how to schedule the repair.

Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until they have been repaired. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger side frontal air bag, free of charge. An interim notice was mailed to owners in September 2014. A second notice was mailed when an adequate supply of parts became available, on December 1, 2014. Please note that the 5-series and X5 vehicles are only included if they are equipped with the optional sports steering wheel. The affected vehicles are equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture.

Additionally, vehicles that have had their driver side frontal air bag replaced previously as part of a recall remedy need to have their air bag replaced under this recall as well. Note: On December 17, 2015 BMW removed the model year 2004 X5 3.0i and 4.4i Sports Activity vehicle from this recall. Those vehicles were mistakenly identified as including the air bags that are subject to this recall.
