What Happened
The driver's air bag inflator in your vehicle is responsible for deploying the air bag in the event of a crash. In some earlier models, a specific type of steering wheel was installed, which can put the inflator at risk of exploding.
Risk if Unfixed
If the inflator explodes during a crash, it could send sharp metal fragments flying towards you and the passengers in the vehicle. This could lead to serious injury or even be fatal.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will inspect the driver's air bag module and replace it if necessary, at no cost to you. They'll also notify you by mail when the repair is ready to be done.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2006-2011 3 Series Sedan (324i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 328xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 335xi), 2006-2012 3 Series Sportswagon (325xi, 328i, 328xi), and 2009-2011 3 Series Sedan (335d) vehicles. The original steering wheel may have been replaced with a sport or M-sport steering wheel equipped with an inflator that can explode during deployment.

Dealers will inspect and replace the driver's air bag module as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 30, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

What Happened
The airbag system in your vehicle has a part called an inflator module that helps deploy the airbag in a crash. In certain models, this inflator can be faulty and contain a type of ammonium nitrate that breaks down over time.
Risk if Unfixed
If this happens, the airbag inflator could suddenly rupture while you're driving, sending sharp metal fragments towards you and others inside the vehicle. This could lead to serious injury or even death.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will replace the faulty airbag inflator for free. They'll do this to ensure your safety and prevent any potential harm. The repair is entirely free of charge, and you should get it done as soon as possible.

These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

Original — Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver air bag. On X5 and X6 vehicles, only the inflator will be replaced. All repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 11, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

What Happened
The electrical wiring and connectors in your vehicle control the heating and air conditioning system. In certain 2006-2011 BMW models, these wires and connectors can overheat.
Risk if Unfixed
If the wiring overheats, the connectors could melt, which could cause a fire, even if you're not driving. This is a serious risk, especially when your vehicle is parked and unattended.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will replace the faulty wiring and electrical connectors with new ones, at no cost to you. You should schedule this repair as soon as you receive the notice, and you'll get a second notice when the repair is ready.
