What Happened
The inflator module in your airbag system is the part that helps deploy the airbag in the event of a crash. In some older BMW 3 Series models, the original inflator might have been replaced with a newer one, but it could still fail and cause a serious problem.
Risk if Unfixed
If the inflator explodes during a crash, it could send sharp metal fragments flying into your body, causing serious injury or even death. This is a life-threatening situation.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will check your airbag system and replace the driver's airbag module if necessary, at no cost to you. You should schedule this repair as soon as possible, especially if you've received a recall notice in the mail.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2006-2011 3 Series Sedan (324i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 328xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 335xi), 2006-2012 3 Series Sportswagon (325xi, 328i, 328xi), and 2009-2011 3 Series Sedan (335d) vehicles. The original steering wheel may have been replaced with a sport or M-sport steering wheel equipped with an inflator that can explode during deployment.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.
Original — Remedy
Dealers will inspect and replace the driver's air bag module as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 30, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

What Happened
The airbag in your driver's seat is designed to protect you in case of a crash. However, the inflator in your airbag could fail and explode, sending sharp metal fragments into the cabin.

An inflator explosion could seriously injure or even kill you or your passengers. Sharp metal fragments could strike you or your loved ones, causing severe harm.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will replace the faulty airbag inflator with a safe one, at no cost to you. This repair is completely free, and you should schedule it as soon as you receive the recall notice.

These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

Original — Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver air bag. On X5 and X6 vehicles, only the inflator will be replaced. All repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 11, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

The electrical wiring and connectors in your car's heating and air conditioning system are crucial for keeping you cool or warm. In some 2006-2011 BMW models, these wires and connectors can get too hot and fail.

The wiring and electrical connectors for the system that controls air flow for the heating and air conditioning system may overheat.
