What Happened
The throttle positioning sensor in your vehicle is like a referee that helps your engine know how fast to go. It's possible that this sensor isn't working perfectly, or it might be dirty, and the computer in your car isn't calibrated correctly.
Risk if Unfixed
If this happens, a warning light might come on, and your vehicle could go into a special mode called 'Limp Home Mode' without warning. This means that your car will start to slow down and limit its performance to keep you safe, but it might be annoying and inconvenient.
Free Fix
Your Volvo dealer will update the software in your vehicle's computer to fix the problem, and the repair is free. You should schedule an appointment as soon as you get the recall notice, and you can call Volvo at 1-800-458-1552 for more information.

Original — What Happened
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, A COMBINATION OF THROTTLE POSITIONING SENSOR IRREGULARITIES, A DIRTY THROTTLE HOUSING, AND/OR INEFFICIENT SOFTWARE CALIBRATION MAY CAUSE A WARNING LAMP TO LIGHT AND THE SUBSEQUENT ONSET OF LIMP HOME MODES.

THIS RESULTED IN A HIGH NUMBER OF VEHICLES GOING INTO THE LIMP HOME MODE WITHOUT NEED.
