SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS

Manufacturer
GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
What Happened
The brake pipe in your vehicle is a vital part that connects the brake system to the front wheels. In some cases, this pipe can develop a hairline crack during the manufacturing process.
Risk if Unfixed
If the brake pipe cracks or breaks, you might feel the brake pedal travel further than usual when you press it. This could make your brakes less effective, and if you're driving fast, you could lose control of your vehicle and be more likely to crash.
Free Fix
Your authorized dealer will replace the faulty brake pipe with a new one at no cost to you. You'll receive a notification letter on May 29, 2003, and you should schedule the repair as soon as possible.

Original — What Happened
CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES WERE BUILT WITH A LEFT-FRONT BRAKE PIPE WITH A CIRCUMFERENTIAL SCORE AT A RANDOM LOCATION ALONG THE LENGTH OF THE PIPE AS THE RESULT OF THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS. IF THE BRAKE PIPE PARTIALLY OR FULLY FRACTURED, BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL WOULD IMMEDIATELY INCREASE AND FRONT BRAKE PERFORMANCE WOULD BE REDUCED.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
IF BRAKING PERFORMANCE IS REDUCED, A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
Original — Remedy
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE LEFT-FRONT BRAKE PIPE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON MAY 29, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020, GMC AT 1-800-462-8782, OR OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-442-8006.

POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Manufacturer
GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
What Happened
The override in your vehicle's automatic transmission is a safety feature that prevents the transmission from shifting out of park unless the ignition is on. However, this feature can malfunction, allowing the transmission to shift out of park with the ignition off.
Risk if Unfixed
If the override fails, you could accidentally shift your vehicle into gear while parked, which could cause it to roll away and potentially crash or cause injury.
Free Fix
Your authorized dealer will disable the override, ensuring the transmission behaves as it should. This repair is free, and you should schedule it as soon as you receive the recall notice.
Show original NHTSA language
Original — What Happened
CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 114, "THEFT PROTECTION." IN ADDITION, THESE VEHICLES HAVE AN OVERRIDE THAT CAN ALLOW THE TRANSMISSION TO BE SHIFTED OUT OF PARK WITH THE IGNITION IN THE OFF POSITION.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
THESE OVERRIDES ARE NOT PERMITTED UNLESS THE VEHICLE HAS A LOCKING STEERING COLUMN.
Original — Remedy
DEALERS WILL ELIMINATE THESE CONDITIONS BY DISABLING THE OVERRIDES. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON MAY 29, 2003.
