What Happened
The airbag in your BMW is designed to protect you in a crash by inflating quickly to cushion the impact. In some models, the airbag inflator might have been replaced with a temporary part that could fail and explode, causing serious harm.
Risk if Unfixed
If the airbag inflator explodes, it could send sharp metal fragments flying towards you or other passengers, leading to life-threatening injuries or even death.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will replace the faulty airbag inflator at no cost to you. This repair is free, and you should schedule it as soon as you get the recall notice.

Original — Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver air bag. On X5 and X6 vehicles, only the inflator will be replaced. All repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 11, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
