What Happened
The rear license plate lamp on your X4 is a light that shows your license plate number when it's dark outside. In some 2022 X4 models, this lamp might not shine brightly enough.
Risk if Unfixed
If your license plate lamp isn't working well, other drivers might have trouble seeing your plate, especially at night. This could lead to confusion and maybe even a crash.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will adjust the license plate bracket to make sure the lamp shines brightly enough. This repair is free, and you should schedule it as soon as you get the recall notice.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2022 X4 xDrive30i, X4 M40i, and X4M vehicles. The rear license plate may not be illuminated properly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

The incorrectly positioned license plate lamp cutouts could cause confusion to other drivers on the road, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will modify the rear license plate bracket, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on December 17, 2021. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
