What Happened
The air bag in your V70 or XC70 is designed to protect you in a crash. However, in your vehicle, the air bag's propellant can break down over time, especially in hot and humid conditions, causing it to explode when it deploys.
Risk if Unfixed
If the air bag inflates abnormally, sharp metal fragments could shoot towards you or your passengers, leading to serious injury or even death.
Free Fix
Your Volvo dealer will replace the faulty air bag with a new one, free of charge. You should schedule this repair as soon as possible to ensure your safety on the road.

Original — What Happened
Volvo Cars USA, LLC (Volvo Car) is recalling certain 2001-2007 V70 and XC70 vehicles. The driver's air bag inflator may explode during deployment, due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

Dealers will replace the driver's air bag, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 14, 2021. Owners may contact Volvo Car customer service at 1-888-458-1552. Volvo Car's number for this recall is R10136.
