STEERING

Manufacturer
Ford Motor Company
What Happened
The lower intermediate shaft is a critical part of your vehicle's steering system. It connects the steering column to the wheels. In your Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, or Town Car, this part can corrode severely if you live in certain regions, including the Northeast and Midwest.
Risk if Unfixed
If the lower intermediate shaft corrodes too much, it can seize and cause the steering column to collapse. If this happens, you could lose control of your vehicle, which increases the risk of a serious crash.
Free Fix
Ford will repair your vehicle at no cost to you. Your dealer will replace the lower intermediate shaft, inspect the upper intermediate shaft and steering column lower bearing for damage, and fix or replace them if needed. If the steering column lower bearing has already separated, they'll install a retainer clip to secure it in place.
