What Happened
The check valve in your Sonata's fuel system is a small part that helps keep air from getting into your fuel tank. In some 2020-2023 models, this valve can get damaged and allow air to seep in, causing problems.
Risk if Unfixed
If the air gets into the tank, it can expand and melt the tank, causing it to leak. This could lead to a fire, which could cause serious injury or damage.
Free Fix
Your Hyundai dealer will inspect and replace the damaged check valve, and also check your fuel tank for damage. They'll update the software in your engine control unit to prevent this issue from happening again. All repairs will be free of charge, and you should schedule an appointment as soon as you get your recall notice.

Original — What Happened
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Sonata vehicles. A damaged check valve can allow air to enter the fuel tank, causing it to expand and contact hot exhaust components, melting the tank.

Original — Remedy
Dealers will inspect and replace the check valve. The fuel tank assembly will be inspected for damage and replaced if necessary. Additionally, dealers will inspect and update the engine control unit software. All repairs will be performed as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed beginning March 13, 2026. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 286.
