What Happened
Your vehicle may have a faulty driveshaft that can break, causing problems with steering and, in some cases, braking. This is a hydraulic pump that's part of the power steering system.
Risk if Unfixed
If the pump breaks, you may need to work harder to steer your vehicle, and in some cases, you may need to press the brake pedal harder to stop. However, you won't lose the ability to steer or stop completely.
Free Fix
Don't worry, this is a free fix. The dealership will replace the faulty pump, and it's been happening since February 14, 2005. You can contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC at 1-866-996-9463 to schedule the repair.

Original — What Happened
SOME PICKUP TRUCKS, VANS, AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A HYDRAULIC PUMP DRIVESHAFT THAT CAN FRACTURE, RESULTING IN IMMEDIATE LOSS OF HYDRAULIC POWER STEERING ASSIST. ON CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH HYDRO-BOOST POWER BRAKES, THE SAME CONDITION CAN RESULT IN LOSS OF POWER ASSIST FOR BRAKING AFTER THE RESERVE PRESSURE IS DEPLETED.

AN INOPERATIVE PUMP CAN CAUSE INCREASED STEERING EFFORT, AND IN HYDRO-BOOST EQUIPPED VEHICLES ALSO INCREASED BRAKING EFFORT, BUT DOES NOT COMPLETELY ELIMINATE THE ABILITY TO STEER OR SLOW THE VEHICLE.
