What Happened
The air bag in your driver's seat is a crucial safety device that deploys in a crash to protect you. In some older 3 Series BMWs, the inflator inside this air bag may be replaced with a faulty one that can malfunction.

If the inflator explodes during a crash, it could spray sharp metal fragments at you or your passengers, causing serious injury or even death.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2006-2011 3 Series Sedan (324i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 328xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 335xi), 2006-2012 3 Series Sportswagon (325xi, 328i, 328xi), and 2009-2011 3 Series Sedan (335d) vehicles. The original steering wheel may have been replaced with a sport or M-sport steering wheel equipped with an inflator that can explode during deployment.

These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

Original — Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver air bag. On X5 and X6 vehicles, only the inflator will be replaced. All repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 11, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

What Happened
The wiring and electrical connectors in your car's heating and air conditioning system can get too hot and overheat.
Risk if Unfixed
If the wiring overheats, it could melt the electrical connectors, even when you're not driving. This could cause a fire, which could spread quickly and be a serious safety risk.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will replace the faulty wiring and electrical connectors for free. You'll get a notice when the repair is ready, and they'll do it at no cost to you.

The wiring and electrical connectors for the system that controls air flow for the heating and air conditioning system may overheat.
