What Happened
The airbag inflator in your steering wheel is designed to inflate the airbag in a crash. In some older 3 Series BMWs, the original inflator might have been replaced with a different one that could fail during deployment.
Risk if Unfixed
If this happens, the inflator could burst and send sharp metal fragments flying towards you or your passengers, causing serious injury or even death.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will inspect and replace the airbag module, if necessary, at no cost to you. You should schedule this repair as soon as you get the recall notice.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2006-2011 3 Series Sedan (324i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 328xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 335xi), 2006-2012 3 Series Sportswagon (325xi, 328i, 328xi), and 2009-2011 3 Series Sedan (335d) vehicles. The original steering wheel may have been replaced with a sport or M-sport steering wheel equipped with an inflator that can explode during deployment.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

Dealers will inspect and replace the driver's air bag module as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 30, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

What Happened
The driver's airbag in your vehicle has a small explosive part called an inflator that helps deploy the airbag in an accident. Unfortunately, some of these inflators in affected models could suddenly fail and explode, especially if exposed to hot and humid conditions.
Risk if Unfixed
If the inflator explodes, sharp metal fragments could hurt or even kill you or your passengers. This is a very serious risk, and you should take immediate action to get your vehicle repaired.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will replace the faulty airbag inflator with a new, safe one at no cost to you. This is a free repair, and you should schedule it as soon as possible to ensure your safety on the road.

These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

Original — Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver air bag. On X5 and X6 vehicles, only the inflator will be replaced. All repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 11, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

What Happened
The wiring and electrical connectors in your vehicle control the heating and air conditioning system. In some 2006-2011 BMW models, this wiring could become damaged and overheat.
Risk if Unfixed
If the wiring overheats, it could melt the electrical connectors, causing a fire even when your vehicle is parked and unattended.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will replace the faulty wiring and connectors for free, at no cost to you, as soon as you get a second notice with a repair schedule.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2006-2011 323i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 328xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 335xi and M3, 2007-2011 328i xDrive, 335i xDrive and 335is and 2009-2011 335d vehicles. The wiring and electrical connectors for the system that controls air flow for the heating and air conditioning system may overheat.

Wiring that overheats could cause the electrical connectors to melt, and increase the risk of a fire, even when the vehicle is unattended.
