What Happened
The Pedestrian Warning System in your car is a feature that alerts pedestrians when you're approaching them, making sure they know you're there. Unfortunately, some 2013, 2018-2021 Model S, 2020-2021 Model X, 2018-2022 Model 3, and 2020-2022 Model Y vehicles had a problem with this system and the sounds were turned off by mistake.

If the Pedestrian Warning System sounds aren't working, pedestrians might not know you're approaching, which could lead to a crash.

Tesla will send a free software update to your vehicle over the airwaves, which will fix the issue. This update is free, and you should check if you've received it by contacting Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752.

Original — What Happened
Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2013, 2018-2021 Model S, 2020-2021 Model X, 2018-2022 Model 3, and 2020-2022 Model Y vehicles. A factory reset muted the Pedestrian Warning System (PWS) sounds. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 141, "Minimum Sound Requirements for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles."

What Happened
Your vehicle's forward collision avoidance system relies on a camera to detect potential hazards on the road. In some 2017-2021 Model S, Model 3, Model X, and 2020-2021 Model Y vehicles with software version 2021.36.5.2, a problem with the camera's communication could cause false warnings or unwanted braking.
Risk if Unfixed
If the AEB system activates unexpectedly, your car could slam on the brakes suddenly, which could lead to a crash, especially at high speeds.
Free Fix
Tesla will send an update to your vehicle's software, free of charge, to fix this issue. You don't need to visit a dealership; the update will be installed remotely. Look out for notification from Tesla, and if you have any questions, you can contact their customer service at 1-877-798-3752.
