What Happened
The Transmission Control Module in your MX-5 (Miata) is a computer that helps your automatic transmission shift gears smoothly. In some 2016-2019 models, this computer was programmed incorrectly.
Risk if Unfixed
If this happens, your car could suddenly downshift and slow down quickly, making it harder for you to control the vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash.
Free Fix
Your Mazda dealer will update the TCM with new software to fix the issue, and it will be done at no cost to you. You should schedule an appointment as soon as you receive the recall notice.

Original — What Happened
Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2016-2019 MX-5 (Miata) vehicles with automatic transmissions. Due to incorrect programming of the Transmission Control Module (TCM), certain conditions may cause the vehicle to unexpectedly downshift and abruptly decelerate.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
If the vehicle abruptly downshifts, the driver may lose control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Original — Remedy
Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the TCM with corrected software, free of charge. The recall began March 14, 2019. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, option 4. Mazda's number for this recall is 3019A.
