What Happened
The air bag control module in your MX-5 Miata is a computer that helps decide when to deploy your front air bags during a crash. In some 2016-2023 models, this software can get it wrong and make the air bags deploy too forcefully.
Risk if Unfixed
If the air bags deploy with too much force, they could cause serious injury, even in a minor crash. This is a serious safety issue that requires immediate attention.

Your Mazda dealer will update the air bag control module software to prevent excessive air bag deployment – and it will be done at no cost to you. You should schedule the repair as soon as you get the recall notice.

Original — What Happened
Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2016-2023 MX-5 Miata vehicles. A software error in the air bag control module may cause the front air bags to deploy with excessive force during a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

Dealers will update the Sophisticated Air Bag Sensor (SAS) control module software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 7, 2024. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 6924I.
