What Happened
The seal in your motorcycle's reverse gear system is a crucial part that keeps moisture out of the control unit where the reverse gear is located. In some 2021-2024 R 18 models, this seal can break down and let water in.
Risk if Unfixed
If the reverse gear control unit overheats, there's a serious risk of a fire breaking out, which could cause damage to your bike and put you in harm's way.

Your BMW dealer will replace the faulty reverse gear control unit with a new one, at no cost to you, as soon as you get the recall notice. This is a free repair, and you should schedule it promptly to ensure your safety on the road.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2021-2024 R 18 motorcycles equipped with the optional reverse gear. The seal for the reverse gear control unit may deteriorate and allow moisture inside the control unit, which can result in the unit overheating.

An overheated reverse gear control unit increases the risk of a fire.
Original — Remedy
Dealers will replace the reverse gear control unit, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 27, 2026. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. Motorcycles in this recall were previously recalled under 24V716. Motorcycles previously repaired under the prior recall will need the new repair completed.
