What Happened
The seal for your motorcycle's reverse gear control unit is a small part that keeps moisture out. In some 2021-2024 R18 models, this seal could fail, letting water inside the control unit.
Risk if Unfixed
If the control unit overheats from moisture, it could catch fire. This could cause a serious fire hazard.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will disconnect the reverse gear control unit temporarily, then replace it with a new one at no cost to you. This repair is free, and you should schedule it as soon as you get the recall notice.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2021-2024 BMW R18 motorcycles. The seal for the reverse gear control unit may deteriorate and allow moisture inside the control unit, which can result in the unit overheating.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
An overheated reverse gear control unit increases the risk of a fire.
Original — Remedy
As an interim remedy, the reverse gear control unit will be disconnected from the electrical system of the motorcycle, free of charge. Dealers will replace the reverse gear control unit, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 7, 2025 Owners may contact BMW Customer Service at 1-800-525-7417.
