What Happened
The seal on your R18's reverse gear control unit is designed to keep moisture out. But in some 2021-2024 models, this seal can break down and let moisture in, causing the control unit to overheat.
Risk if Unfixed
If the reverse gear control unit overheats, it could catch fire, which could cause serious damage to your motorcycle and potentially put you at risk of injury.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will temporarily disconnect the reverse gear control unit from your motorcycle's electrical system, then replace it with a new one that's designed to prevent overheating – all at no cost to you.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2021-2024 BMW R18 motorcycles. The seal for the reverse gear control unit may deteriorate and allow moisture inside the control unit, which can result in the unit overheating.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
An overheated reverse gear control unit increases the risk of a fire.
Original — Remedy
As an interim remedy, the reverse gear control unit will be disconnected from the electrical system of the motorcycle, free of charge. Dealers will replace the reverse gear control unit, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 7, 2025 Owners may contact BMW Customer Service at 1-800-525-7417.
