SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:DISC:CALIPER

Manufacturer
BMW of North America, LLC
What Happened
The front brake caliper is a critical part on your motorcycle that helps you stop safely. In some 2019-2020 BMW models, this caliper can start leaking brake fluid when you park your bike.
Risk if Unfixed
If the brake fluid leaks out over time, you might not have enough fluid to stop quickly and safely. This could increase the risk of a crash.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will inspect the brake caliper and replace it with a new, improved one at no cost to you. You should schedule the repair as soon as you get the recall notice.

Original — What Happened
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2019-2020 R 1250 GS, GS Adventure and R 1250 RT, 2020 S 1000 RR and S 1000 XR motorcycles. The front brake calipers may leak brake fluid when parked. As such, these motorcycles fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 122, "Motorcycle Brake Systems."
Original — Risk if Unfixed
Overtime, a leaking front brake caliper can reduce the amount of brake fluid in the reservoir. Low volume could affect brake performance, increasing the risk of crash.
Original — Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and if necessary, replace the front brake calipers with an improved version, free of charge. BMW issued owners an interim notification on October 12, 2020. As of January 19, 2021, a remedy was still not available. The recall began March 8, 2021. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FLUID

Manufacturer
BMW of North America, LLC
What Happened
The brake fluid reservoir cap on your motorcycle is the part that tells you which type of brake fluid to use and how to fill it up. In certain 2018-2020 BMW motorcycles, this cap might not clearly show this information, making it hard to do the brake fluid maintenance right.
Risk if Unfixed
If you don't do the brake fluid maintenance correctly, your brakes might not work as well as they should. This could lead to a crash, which is a serious safety risk.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will replace the brake fluid reservoir cap with a new one that clearly shows the right brake fluid type and filling instructions. This repair is free of charge, and you should schedule it as soon as you get the recall notice.
