Component
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Manufacturer
BMW OF NORTH AMERICA, LLC
What Happened
The fuel rails in your engine are like a network of tiny highways that deliver fuel to your engine. In very cold and dry conditions, a spark can jump from the fuel rails to the engine's computer, causing problems.
Risk if Unfixed
If this happens, your engine could stall while you're driving, making it hard to control your vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will add two extra ground cables to your engine compartment to prevent the spark from happening, and this repair is completely free. They'll do it as soon as possible, so be sure to schedule the appointment when you get the recall notice.

Original — What Happened
ON CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH V8 ENGINES, IN CONDITIONS OF BELOW FREEZING TEMPERATURES COMBINED WITH LOW HUMIDITY, IT IS POSSIBLE FOR ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE TO OCCUR AT THE FUEL RAILS. IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR, THE ENGINE ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (ECU) COULD BE AFFECTED SO THAT ENGINE STALLING COULD RESULT.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
IF STALLING WERE TO OCCUR, THE DRIVER MAY NOT BE ABLE TO MAINTAIN VEHICLE SPEED OR ACCELERATE AND THE POWER STEERING COULD FAIL INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Original — Remedy
DEALERS WILL ATTACH TWO GROUND CABLES IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 29, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117.
