ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

Manufacturer
BMW OF NORTH AMERICA, LLC
What Happened
The fuel rails in your V8 engine are where the fuel meets the engine. In very cold and dry conditions, a spark can jump between the rails, which could disrupt your engine's control unit.
Risk if Unfixed
If this happens, your engine could stall without warning. This means you might lose control of your vehicle and struggle to steer, increasing the risk of a collision.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will add two grounding cables to your engine compartment to prevent this issue, free of charge. You should schedule this fix as soon as possible.

Original — What Happened
ON CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH V8 ENGINES, IN CONDITIONS OF BELOW FREEZING TEMPERATURES COMBINED WITH LOW HUMIDITY, IT IS POSSIBLE FOR ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE TO OCCUR AT THE FUEL RAILS. IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR, THE ENGINE ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (ECU) COULD BE AFFECTED SO THAT ENGINE STALLING COULD RESULT.
Original — Risk if Unfixed
IF STALLING WERE TO OCCUR, THE DRIVER MAY NOT BE ABLE TO MAINTAIN VEHICLE SPEED OR ACCELERATE AND THE POWER STEERING COULD FAIL INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Original — Remedy
DEALERS WILL ATTACH TWO GROUND CABLES IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 29, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117.
