Component
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:EMISSION CONTROL:GAS RECIRCULATION VALVE (EGR VALVE)
Manufacturer
BMW of North America, LLC
What Happened
The EGR valve in your 540d xDrive is responsible for controlling exhaust gases. Over time, it can develop a leak that lets diesel soot mix with coolant, creating a smoldering risk.
Risk if Unfixed
If the EGR valve fails and soot mixes with coolant, it could cause your intake manifold to melt, increasing the risk of a fire in your engine compartment.
Free Fix
Your BMW dealer will inspect and replace the EGR module and intake manifold if necessary, all at no cost to you. You should schedule this repair as soon as possible after receiving the recall notice.
